Dr. Mike and Dr. Cathy are a husband and wife team. Dr. Cathy Deschenes received her degree in Dentistry from the University of Laval in 1999. Dr. Michael Poitras also received his degree in Dentistry from the University of Laval in 2004 after completing his Masters of Science in Biochemistry from Western University.
Contrary to what people believe, Mike and Cathy didn’t meet in Dental school. They both lived in the same apartment building in Quebec City. At the time, Mike was finishing his degree in Dentistry, and Dr. Cathy was working as an associate in a dental office. Dr. Cathy, the giving person that she is, cooked for Mike during his exams, and the rest is history!
They were married in Quebec City and became the lucky parents of their three beautiful children Leanne, Vincent and Yasmine.
Dr. Mike, originally from Sudbury, had spent a lot of time as a child in Ottawa and loved it here. They liked the fact Ottawa was mid-way between Quebec City and Sudbury. After bringing Dr. Cathy to Ottawa a few times, she fell in love with the capital city. They then decided to move to Kanata and subsequently to Stittsville.
Their practice in Stittsville started in June of 2004 and has grown over the years. They pride themselves on creating a family environment in and out of the office and being involved in the community of Stittsville.

Dr. Cathy Deschênes
Dentist
Born in Chapais, Québec, Dr. Cathy was primarily raised in La Baie, Québec, and went to the University of Laval in Québec City. After completing one year in nursing, she switched to dental school. Following graduation in 1999, she practiced in Québec City until moving to the Ottawa area in 2004. Oddly enough, she did not meet her husband in dental school since she graduated before Michael even started; they were next-door neighbours, and the fact that they were both dentists was a happy coincidence. Dr. Cathy remains forever active as a humanitarian, having worked in underserved communities in Nicaragua and Kenya, as well as an active member of the Stittsville community by helping host events such as Merge Robotics, the Stocking Project (Kanata, Stittsville and Carp), the Corona Share (Kanata, Stittsville and Carp), as well as donating office space for official PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s not forget Red Barn Dental’s annual appearance at our very own Stittsville Christmas Parade.
Dr. Michael Poitras
Dentist
Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Michael graduated from university with an honours bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, then moved on to complete a master’s degree in dental biochemistry. Next, he headed to Québec City, where he obtained his dental degree in 2004. After 12 years of living the university student lifestyle, he sure was glad to start practicing his trade and was even more glad to open a practice with his life partner. Dr. Mike loves to be an active community member, whether it be the community in Santa Helena, Costa Rica, where he sponsored an underserved family in need of extensive medical care, or whether it be his home community here in Stittsville, where he helps host events such as Merge Robotics, the Stocking Project (Kanata, Stittsville and Carp), the Corona Share (Kanata, Stittsville and Carp), as well as donating office space for official PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Erin Cessford
Dentist
Born and raised in Ottawa, it’s no surprise that Dr. Erin’s hometown of Carp/Stittsville holds a very special place in her heart. Dr. Erin graduated with an honours bachelor’s degree in biology and completed a research-based master’s degree in immunology. After deciding to pursue her ultimate goal of becoming a dentist, Dr. Erin successfully completed the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Dr. Erin and her family have been long time patients of Dr. Deschênes and Dr. Poitras. Having personally experienced their exceptional standard of care and kindness, Dr. Erin knew that working at Deschênes-Poitras Red Barn Dental would be a perfect fit. Dr. Erin’s philosophy is focused on being patient-centered, tailoring treatment needs to every individual to ensure that the highest quality of dentistry is provided with a gentle, kind and compassionate approach. In her downtime, Dr. Erin loves to horseback ride, spend time outdoors and watch a good baseball game.
